Open Sound World,
or OSW, is a scalable, extensible programming environment that allows
musicians, sound designers and researchers to process sound in response
to expressive real-time control. OSW combines a familiar visual
patching paradigm with solid programming-language features such as a
strong type system and hierarchical name spaces. OSW also includes an
intuitive model for specifying new components using a graphical
interface and high-level C++ expressions, making it easy to develop and
share new music and signal-processing algorithms.

Pd
A free real-time computer music software package resembling Max. You
can get Pd for Linux, Windows, Mac OSX, or IRIX from
http://www.crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/software.html or ftp://felix.ucsd.edu.
Installation instructions are in the HTML DOCUMENTATION at:

download and unpack Pd, you will also find the html documentation
locally in the file, .../pd-whatever/doc/1.manual/index.htm. To unpack
Pd: LINUX (or freeBSD). Download Pd, which will be a ".tar.gz" file; to
unpack it, type "zcat [name].tar.gz | tar xf -" to a shell. This
creates a directory with a name like "pd-0.35". There are also RPMs
available. Microsoft Windows. Pd is distributed as a "zip" file. Unzip
this, creating a directory such as \pd. IRIX. Download Pd, which will
be a "tar.Z" file. You can unpack this by typing "zcat [name].tar.Z |
tar xf -" to a shell. Macintosh. The web browser will automatically
unpack the distributions into a folder such as "pd-0.35" on your

GNU Octave

provides insights into the 1993 low-cost shareware version 1.1-B as run
on Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. To dispense with a few minor logistical
concerns, the program could provide easier access to the registration
form, one "About the Program" screen instead of repeated appearances of
the screen under each menu item, and an ESCAPE option (without exiting
the program altogether) in the middle of its drills.
